The Schoolyard Wildlife Challenge, launched for the first time in March 2025, engaged over 1,000 students from 16 schools across Israel in a discovery and learning project focused on local wildlife diversity. Together, they uploaded more than 3,000 observations representing 526 species to the iNaturalist platform.

For about a year, the day-to-day work of the Center’s staff was studied through observations, interviews, and analysis of documents and digital platforms. The study examined how the team manages the tension between three core goals: scientific validity, public engagement, and FAIR data principles.

We conducted a study reviewing 19 years of the Big Bird Count initiative to understand its evolution and draw insights about its past operation and future direction.
